Roz & Alan’s Wedding at Islington Mill, 7th May 2016

Roz and Alan were married at Islington Mill in Salford on Saturday, 7th May, 2016. I was really excited to shoot a wedding at Islington Mill as, though it was a venue I’d photographed before, for events such as  The Last Sunday, but I’d never shot a wedding there. Roz and Alan decorated the Mill in ribbons, bunting, flowers and fairy lights  and made it look totally magical. It was a beautiful wedding, full of colour and a real delight to photograph. Here are a small selection of some of my favourite images from the day. Sara Lowes, Smoke Signals

Part of Manchester’s 2016 Future Everything Festival, Smoke Signals is a mixed media art installation by Ed Carter and David Cranmer. The installation, which converts digital data into a audio-visual sculptures using smoke cannons and sub-sonic frequencies, was housed at the International Anthony Burgess Foundation and Future Everything also commissioned three musicians to each create a special one-off performances alongside the artwork. One of the three commissioned artists, Sara Lowes, asked me along to document her performance and the installation also gave us the opportunity for a unique portrait shoot. I Live Hip Hop with Kendrick Lamar

I Live Hip Hop was a special, secret event put on by Brighter Sound and Reebok at Manchester’s Wonder Inn. It was a series of creative workshops for 15-25 year old aspiring MCs, producers, DJs and vocalists assisted by some incredible professional artists including DJ Woody, Visceral, G-Kut, Jo Mo, 8 Gold Rings, Elizabeth Vince, Mul and Persia. The talent of the mentors and the participants was mind-blowing. It was a real privilege to watch them work and perform.

To top it all off, at the end of the day there was a surprise appearance from multi Grammy award-winning Hip Hop legend, Kendrick Lamar.

Written In The Margins

Yesterday I photographed the amazing ‘Written in the Margins’ event at The Manchester Jewish Museum. Part of 2016’s feminist Wonder Women Festival , Written in the Margins combined debate, spoken word and performance alongside  a zine-making workshop. Claire Pollard read her interpretation of   Ovid’s Heroides, followed by a fascinating panel debate about women in the music industry with Laura Snapes (editor and music journalist), Vanessa Reed (CEO of PRS Foundation), singer-songwriter Roxanne de Bastion and Chris Long (BBC Manchester Introducing,), and chaired by Stuart Maconie. To finish, an original musical composition, inspired by Ovid’s Heroides, was performed by  Serafina Steer.

Brighter Sound – Young Musicians Week

Last week I had the pleasure of working with Brighter Sound, an organisation that produces creative music projects and events in Manchester. The project was ‘Young Musicians Week’, an opportunity for young people to work with some amazing musicians and artists including Richard Jupp (Elbow), Natalie McCool, Jenna G, InnaVoice and Burgaboy. You can see some of my favourite shots from the week below.

Brighter Sound also organised the Beth Orton residency last year (also featuring Natalie McCool) which culminated in a beautiful group performance at the end of a week of collaboration and songwriting – you can see my photos of their one-night-only gig here.

MMC Weekender 2016

I headed on down to Rebellion on Saturday night to shoot my friend’s band, Barbarian Hermit, who were playing a set as part of the Manchester Metal Collective Weekender. It was such a bonkers night and awesome fun. Here are some of my favourite shots from the night.

Favourite Images of 2015

I had a lot of fun in 2015 and took a LOT of pictures. Hannah & Jag’s Beautiful Home Wedding

Hannah and Jag Bains were married on 2nd August, 2015, at an absolutely gorgeous DIY wedding at their home in Bradford, West Yorkshire. They turned their garden in to the most beautiful ceremony and reception venue, full of handmade decorations and little touches of individuality, such as hand painted names stones for table settings. The day itself was built around family and children, especially Hannah and Jag’s two gorgeous boys, Zac & Finn. It was a real delight to shoot and has to be one of the loveliest weddings I’ve ever photographed!

Shooting shooting stars

The Perseid meteor shower occurs each summer, usually around August time, and this year some friends and I decided to head down to the beach at Ainsdale, near Blackpool, to see if we could catch it. The 2015 shower peaked on 12th August but we headed out a few days later as it coincided with a moonless night – the best conditions for stargazing. We set ourselves up with a bbq and a fire to keep us warm and, although the Perseids weren’t as frequent, we had a spectacular view of the Milky Way. I tried my hand at a few panoramic shots of the impressive night sky and, though I didn’t realise it at the time, managed to catch the odd Perseid meteor too! The meteors are visible as white streaks in the photos below.
